Gordon a Favorite Ahead of 2014 Coca-Cola 600
His last victory at the Coca-Cola 600 may have come way back in 1998, but thanks to a strong start to the season, veteran Jeff Gordon is primed to enter the competition’s 2014 edition as the favorite. Even before this year, the race had long been linked to Gordon, as it marked his first-career Sprint Cup win, a feat that turns 20 this May. Though there have been rumblings that retirement could be in the near future for Gordon, by the looks of his success thus far in 2014, he may want to hold off on making such plans just yet. As of May 12, Gordon owns a comfortable lead in the Sprint Cup standings with 394 points to second place Matt Kenseth’s 379 and third place Kyle Busch’s 373.
Nine different drivers have won since Gordon’s last Coca-Cola 600 triumph, and when action unfolds May 25 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, it will be Kevin Harvick who will be seeking his second straight victory at the race and third in four years. The last driver to repeat at the Coca-Cola 600 was Jimmie Johnson who claimed three straight from 2003-05. Both Harvick and Johnson have gotten off to rocky starts in 2014, and as of May 12, Johnson ranks seventh in the standings with 340 points and 0 wins, while Harvick is back in 15th with 302 points, but has prevailed twice already in the young season.
