Winston 500 Background

Winston 500 is the former name of two different NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car races, which were held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama, in different years. It was originally the name of the present Aaron's 499 race, which received the name of Winston 500 in the year of 1971. The sponsor Winston supported the race until the year of 1993, and also in 1997. In spite of the name of the race, it is only just a little bit longer than 500 miles. The number of laps in the race is 188. The race usually takes place at the beginning of May or at the end of April. The nowadays Aarons 499 is also one of only 4 races which are presently held with restrictor plates. The other 3 similar races are the UAW Ford 500, the Pepsi 400, and the Daytona 500. The 1997 run, (the champion was Mark Martin), became the speediest NASCAR race in the history of the event, with the average speed of 188.354 mph (303.126 km/h). From the year of 1970 until the end of the Grand Slam as a result of the Ferko lawsuit, the race was referred to as the second part of the sport's Grand Slam.
