Unable to best their Western Conference rivals for home-court advantage, the fifth-seeded Grizzlies will travel to the Staples Center on April 21 to face the Los Angeles Clippers to open first-round play.
Personnel-wise, the Grizzlies experienced a mid-season shakeup (primarily due to new majority owner Robert Pera’s financial concerns about player salaries) as the franchise traded long-time small forward Rudy Gay and backup center Hamed Haddadi for small forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye, along with center Ed Davis and a 2nd-round draft pick for the coming year. Though the trade garnered plenty of skepticism for the loss of Gay’s scoring prowess, the Grizzlies roster has statistically improved as a whole with scoring since the trade—a good omen for the upcoming postseason. Under the leadership of head coach Lionel Hollins, who was named the Western Conference Coach of the Month twice this season, the squad set a new team record for most wins in a season with 56, the highest mark since totaling 50 during the 2003-04 campaign. Heading into the postseason with high morale, along with the skills of veterans Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, will prove invaluable for the roster.
After two games in L.A., the Grizzlies will return to Memphis on April 25 for the third and fourth games in the first round. Be sure to join the roaring crowds at FedEx Forum in support of the postseason efforts with Grizzlies playoff tickets on sale now at Vivid Seats.
