In the 1st round of the 2006 NBA Draft New Orleans selected Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons, and later Marcus Vinicius from Brazil in the 2nd round. During the offseason, the franchise made several important changes in the roster in hope of advancing to the Western Conference postseason for the first time in their history. The New Orleans Hornets traded J.R. Smith and P.J. Brown to Chicago in exchange for Tyson Chandler. They also inked a contract with Peja Stojakovic from Indiana.
