The Clemson Tigers are the athletics teams of the Clemson University. The school participates in the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division of the ACC (the Atlantic Coast Conference). The athletics director is Terry Don Philips. The Clemson Tigers athletics program includes 19 sports teams (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf track and field, cross-country, swimming and diving, volleyball, rowing, and others).
Walter Riggs, the coach of the football team, invented the nickname and chose orange to be the major university color. The additional color is purple. The major Clemsons rivals are the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The main facility for the mens and womens basketball teams is the Littlejohn Coliseum, which was opened in 1968 in Clemson, South Carolina. The arenas seating capacity is over ten thousand spectators. It is also used for other purposes, like various university concerts and graduation ceremonies. The stadium owes its name to James C. Littlejohn, who graduated from the university in 1908 and contributed a lot to many schools building projects. In January 2003 the Coliseum was reopened after the renovation. The playground, the restrooms, the concessions areas, as well as the fan amenities, were renovated.
The Littlejohn Coliseum was the witness of many Clemson Tigers basketball team victories. They became the winners 43 times in the games with many ranked teams. In 1980 the Tigers won over the number one Duke team, and in 2001 they became the winners in the game with the number one North Carolina (with 75-65 score). Twenty two times they managed to beat top-ten opponents.
During their long basketball history the Clemson Tigers won more than 70 percent of all their games. Maybe it can be somehow explained by the love and multiplicity of Tigers fans. The Littlejohn Coliseum is considered to be one of the best places to play basketball, partly because the fans seat very close to the playground (almost right under the hoops).
The Clemson Tigers fight song is the Song that Shakes the Southland. It is a famous tune from the song performed by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The fight song is played at all universitys sports events.
In 1939 the Clemson Tigers mens basketball team became the champion of the Southern Conference Tournament. In 1990 they won the title of the ACC (the Atlantic Coast Conference) Regular Season Champion. The team made three appearances in Sweet 16, and one appearance in 1980 Elite 8.
In 1981 the Clemson Tigers womens basketball team won the ACC Regular Season Championship, and twice, in 1996 and 1999, they became the ACC Tournament Champions. The team made four Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite 8 appearance in 1991.
