The DePaul Blue Demons basketball team is one of the varsity teams, representing DePaul University, which is a private institution of higher education and research in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The school was founded by the Vincentians in 1898, and is presently the largest Catholic university. It is also one of the ten biggest private universities in America and the largest private university of Illinois.
The Blue Demons participate in NCAA Division I. At the same time the team is a member of the well-known Big East Conference. The Universitys mascot is the Blue Demon. The basketball program of the school is the most outstanding and gained most popularity under the supervision of Ray Meyer. He advanced the team into the NCAA Division I basketball Final Four in the 1978-1979 season. The University's first national tournament happened in 1945 on winning the NIT competition. The present mens basketball coach is Jerry Wainwright (he was preceded by Dave Leitao). During Jerrys first season, the Blue Demons lost to Old Dominion on December 17, 2005 with the score 87-43. It occurred after winning # 16 Wake Forest with the score 84-81, and is considered to be the worst defeat in the history of the University. On March 2, 2006, DePaul Blue Demons basketball team defeated the future Big East winner, Syracuse team, with the score 108-69.
In 2006, the Blue Demons NCAA women's basketball program advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in the history of the team. The womens team plays its home games at DePaul Athletic Center, which is multi-purpose center in Chicago with the ability to accommodate up to 3,000 spectators. The arena began operating in 2000, having replaced the Alumni Hall. In 2006 the name DePaul Athletic Center was changed for the Sullivan Athletic Center.
