Florida Gators Basketball NewsAs the first team to win the National College Championship two years in a row since Duke in 1991-92, the Florida Gators are a perennial threat towards the college crown. Florida always represents a menace, especially when at their home arena the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Last year, however, the Gators fell short of qualifying for the national tournament, losing in the NIT semifinal match against the University of Massachusetts River Hawks. Certain concessions should be made to the 2008 team however, as they lost many of the keys players of their championship caliber team, most notably Joakim Noah’s move to the Chicago Bulls. This year the Gators are looking to reclaim their throne, making fundamental changes to their basketball program. Starting with the foundation of a solid team, the Gators have promoted former assistant coach Billy Donovan to head coach, and filled his vacancy with Shaka Smart, formerly of Clemson. Smart is expected to bring with him a strong work ethic and deep understanding of the game. This dyad is a potent combination that can return Florida to its glory days.
