Although Xavier eliminated them in the first round of the NCAA Final Four Championship last year, the Georgia Bulldogs certainly gave the number three seed a hard-fought battle. Coming into the tournament with a .500 record of 17-17, they greatly outplayed their paper stats, only falling short in the closing moments of the match up.
But now it’s another year and, as of recently, another team. Georgia has entered into a period of rebuilding and of loss. As of early summer, the Bulldogs have lost two of their premiere players: guard Billy Humphrey and small forward Jeremy Jacob.
Billy Humphrey, a student with senior standing, was dismissed from the Bulldogs after his third criminal charge within a year. This leaves Georgia without its best three-point and free throw percentage shooter. Jeremy Jacob, on the other hand, has made the decision to transfer to another college, after he was sidelined nearly the entire NCAA season with a foot fracture.
With the challenge of filling these two empty roles in their lineup, Georgia must also navigate their way through a rather difficult 2009 season. At least 13 of their 31 regular season games place them opposite a team that ranked in the NCAA tournament last year, with a possibility of more. Georgia will have to contend with 13 of the arguably best teams from last year.
