Indiana Hoosiers Basketball News | ||
Hoosiers Great Basketball TraditionTo try and fit the entire Hoosier history in such a small space is impossible so we’ll try and cover the main points. Established in 1901, The Indiana Hoosiers basketball program was by no means remarkable. It spent its first 20 years garner lackluster records until the program began to gel. In 1924, Everett Dean (former Hoosier basketball standout star) took over the head coach position and turned the program around. In his first year, the Hoosiers took second in their conference, and within 4 years they had won their conference twice. By the time he left in 1938, Indiana owned three conference titles. His successor, Branch McCracken, took the Hoosiers to NCAA Championship glory in his second year as head coach. After taking a three-year hiatus from 1943-1946, McCracken then returned to lead The Hoosiers to two more Sweet Sixteen appearances and another National Championship. Though they didn’t go quiet after McCracken left in 1965, there was no more NCAA glory until one of the most successful coaches of all-time (Bobby Knight) filled the head coach vacancy in 1971. Although pages could be dedicated to the many accomplishments of Bobby Knight, it can be concisely stated that during Knight’s 29 seasons at Indiana, they won every type of Championship possible (3 NCAA, 1 NIT, 11 Conference) and had only one year without postseason play. Knight (career at Indiana 661-240) is also the last coach to lead a team through a perfect season and win a NCCA title. Now the Hoosiers are looking to add another title to their staggering collection of five. Buy Hoosiers basketball tickets today from Vividseats.com and head out to the Assembly Hall and support your favorite Hoosiers. |
