Cardinals' Strong Tradition“Okay, so you’re the 18th winningest college basketball team of all-time in Division I college basketball? That does impress me much.” The Louisville Cardinals have certainly come a long way from their less than impressive beginnings. In 1911, they posted a 0-3 record. Following years were slightly better but still not striking. Add in a few seasons that were completely cancelled and you’ve got a recipe for lackluster basketball. That was then. This is now. “This” refers to the Louisville Cardinals who boast the 18th winningest college basketball record of all-time, with 11th best win-percentage, 34 NCAA tournament appearances (6th best all-time), 8 Final Four Appearances, and 2 National Championships (1980, 1986). Suffice to say, “This” is a different basketball team. It was during the mid-sixties when Louisville started to solidify themselves as a consistently great team. While everyone else was enjoying the “personal” liberties of the 60s, the Cardinals began a franchise that rarely posted a season record with fewer than 20 wins, occasionally peppering in 30-win seasons as well. Due to their staggeringly inspirational performances on their home court Freedom Hall, the Cardinals have become one of the most televised college basketball teams today. Their home court performance also explains why they’ve been 1st or 2nd in their conference for 22 of the past 31 seasons. What’s new for present-day Cardinals?
