The Nebraska Cornhuskers Background Information

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (also known as the Nebraska Hawkeyes, the Old Gold Knights, the Bugeaters, and the Mankilling Mastodons) are the athletics teams of the University of Nebraska. The teams present name the Nebraska Cornhuskers, or the Huskies for short, was chosen at the beginning of the 20th century.

The team participates in the Big 12 Conference and in the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I. There are twenty-one varsity teams at the university, competing in fourteen different sports. Mens teams compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. The womens university teams compete in basketball, bowling, softball, swimming and diving, soccer, rifle, gymnastics, golf, cross country, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers football teams are usually playing at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. It is a multi-purpose arena situated in Lincoln, Nebraska, opened in 1946. It was named after Bob Devaney, who is a former football coach and the universitys athletic director. Wrestling, gymnastics, swimming and diving teams also train there. The Bob Devaney Sports Center became the replacement of the Nebraska Coliseum (the present home for the womens volleyball team).

Almost all programs of the University of Nebraska are quite successful, except for the basketball team which can not boast of very high results. Unfortunately, the team has never won any NCAA tournament. The first time when the basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament was in 1986. The most fruitful coaching of the Nebraska Cornhuskers belonged to Danny Nee (1987-2000). Under the leadership of this coach the team managed to compete in the NCAA Tournament 5 times out of 6, and saw six National Invitation Tournament bids out of fourteen. In 1994 the team took part in the Big Eight Conference Championship. In 1996 the Nebraska Cornhuskers participated in the NIT Championship. The present coach is Doc Sadler. There are two Academic All-American Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball players - Beau Reid (1989 and 1991) and John Matzke (1984). Hopefully, the teams great results in basketball are in the future. Lets watch their playing and lets not lose our hope the team still has something to show to its spectators and fans.
