North Carolina Tar Heels Information

The North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team is an official athletic team, which represents the University of North California at Chapel Hill. The University was founded in 1789, but opened for students only in 1795. Its first athletic teams appeared only in 1888.

The University athletic team is represented in the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, track and fields, tennis, and wrestling (mens sports); and basketball, fencing, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and fields, tennis, and volleyball (womens sports). The Tar Heels basketball team plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and represents the University in Division I-A of the NCAA championships. The official colors of the team are blue and white. The University athletic representatives got such a name, because it is considered to be the way North Carolinians were called by some Virginians during the Civil War. The Virginians were defeated in that battle. So the Virginians, when met them, asked "Any more tar down in the Old North State, boys" and got the answer - "No, not a bit; old Jeff's bought it all up." And on the followed question What is he going to do with it", the North Carololinians answered "He is going to put it on you'ns heels to make you stick better in the next fight." The official teams mascot is commonly known as Rameses the Ram.

The Tar Heels basketball players have made history in NCAA tournaments. The team has made great strides and proved to be one of the dominant basketball teams in the NCAA history.

The North Carolina Tar Heels first had great success under Frank McGuire coaching, who led them to their first NCAA championship victory in 1957.
