Oklahoma Sooners Information

The Oklahoma Sooners are the athletics teams, which represent the University of Oklahoma (or simply OU or Oklahoma). The university is known for the success of its sports teams. The word Sooners derives from the name given to Oklahoma pioneers, who staked claims before the official land run. The Oklahoma Sooners are the participants of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I A and the South Division of the Big 12 Conference. There are 16 varsity team sports. The OU athletics program is considered to be one of the best among all American Universities. Mens and womens basketball teams are considered to be the national powers. The current university athletics director is Joe Castiglione.

The oldest and bitterest rivals of the Oklahoma Sooners are the University of Texas teams, the Red River Shootout. Another rival is the Oklahoma State University (the Oklahoma State Cowboys), with which the Sooner meet annually at the Bedlam Series. The winner of this rivalry receives the Bedlam Bell. The Oklahoma Sooners are also competing with the University of Nebraska (the Nebraska Cornhuskers).

The Oklahoma Sooners became nationally recognized already in the early 1980s. The head coach Billy Tubbs was leading the basketball team at that time, and three-time All-American Star Wayman Tisdale also made his great contribution to the victorious play of the team. The later now plays at the Lloyd Noble Center. The team has never won any national championships, but nevertheless, it ranks second in the list of the best teams, behind the Illinois. The Oklahoma Sooners took part in the 1988 National Championship. They were defeated by the Kansas basketball team, though earlier, the same season, they won twice over the Jayhawks.

The 2005-2006 season the Oklahoma Sooners finished number six in the Associated Press Poll. Initially they ranked third in the Big 12 Conference Tournament, but didnt manage to save the position, as they lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

In March 2006 the head coach Kevin Sampson left the Oklahoma Sooners and became a new basketball coach of the Indiana University. The following month Jeff Capel III was hired. At first it was difficult for the new coach to organize the team, but he will continue to do his best to lead the team to the coming NCAA Tournaments.

The Oklahoma Sooners participated in the Missouri Valley Conference (1927), the Big 6 Conference (1928-1947), the Big Seven Conference (1948), the Big 8 Conference (1978-1989), and the Big 12 Conference (2000-up to now). The Oklahoma Sooners became a seven-time Conference champions in 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 2001, 2002, and 2003.
