Oklahoma State University has 48 team national titles to great satisfaction of its present director Mike Holder. These national titles were mainly received in wrestling, golf, basketball, baseball, and cross country. While participating in the Big Eight Conference, the Cowboys received 135 team titles and 500 individual championships. In the Big 12, they have received 18 regular season titles and 5 postseason championship victories up to now.
Oklahoma State University first organized a basketball team in the years 1907-1908. The legendary coach Henry Iba was appointed to be a head coach of the team. The Oklahoma State Cowboys won a victory in NCAA competition in the 1945-1946 season. Those teams were headed by Bob Kurland, who was the first seven-foot-tall player of the team. Throughout Iba's 36-year coaching of State Cowboys and also working as the Athletics Director, the team was the winner of 655 games and became popular for the strong, man-to-man defense. Eddie Sutton, one of Henrys former students, was appointed head coach in 1990 and advanced the squad to 2 Final Four appearances. Sean Sutton, his son, who had also previously played for the Cowboys, took over head coaching in 2006.
The history of the team has got a black day in it. On January 27, 2001, a plane, which carried Oklahoma State staff and players crashed in a snow storm not far from Byers, Colorado. All ten on board were reported dead. The plane was flying back home after the team had been defeated by the University of Colorado team. Dan Lawson, a junior guard, Nate Flemings, a freshman guard, Will Hancock, media relations coordinator, Bill Teegins, radio sportscaster of OSU basketball and sports anchor on CBS affiliate KWTV-9 in Oklahoma City, Kendall Durfey, television and radio engineer, Pat Noyes, director of basketball operations, Brian Luinstra, athletic trainer, Jared Weiberg, student assistant, Denver Mills, pilot, and Bjorn Falistrom, co-pilot were all passengers of the plane. Somehow the team members managed to live that tragedy through, having grasped all their power they kept on playing. This sorrow had even united the team and made its fans more anticipating and devoted. The Cowboys can boast of their quality playing up to now, and their basketball games are always worth seeing.
