The Penn State Nittany Lions are the sports teams which represent Pennsylvania State University. Womens sports teams are called the Lady Lions. The major school colors are white and navy blue. The universitys mascot is the Nittany Lion. The mascot was created in 1907 when the universitys senior Joe Mason, after having visited Princeton University, found out that all universities, except for Pennsylvania, had the mascots. So he decided to create one. Once the lions were roaming near the school but were eliminated because of the danger.
So Mason chose this animal to be the mascot.
There are twenty-nine varsity teams at the university. Men participate in basketball, football, fencing, golf, cross country, baseball, gymnastics, lacrosse, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, volleyball, and wrestling. Women compete in basketball, fencing, cross country, gymnastics, field hockey, golf, indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, softball, and volleyball.
Pennsylvania State University athletics teams are the participants of the NCAA Division I A and the Big 10 Conference. The current Pennsylvania State athletics director is Tim Curley. The mens and womens basketball teams are playing at the Bryce Jordan Center. It is a multi-purpose arena in University Park, Pennsylvania State. Opened in 1996, the arena is not only the home to the basketball teams, but also the place where different concerts and commencement ceremonies are held. It is considered to be one of the largest athletics venues from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The seating capacity of the arena is more than fifteen thousand people.
Recently, in March 2006, the 1st and the 2nd rounds of the NCAA Womens Basketball Championship were held at the Bryce Jordan Center. In 2007 and 2008 the PIAA basketball championships will also take place there. The arena is also famous because of the performances of several well-known artists, like Black Eyed Peas, Toby Keith, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, and some others.
The mens basketball team can not boast of very high results in the Big 10 standings, though in 2000-2001 season the team resulted to reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA competition. They managed to do that after having defeated the University of North Carolina basketball team.
The Penn State Nittany Lady Lions were a bit more successful than their colleagues, frequently gaining high positions in the NCAA tournament. The team is notorious for the controversy regarding the teams head coach, Rene Portland, who blamed some of the players in homosexuality.
The womens basketball team participated 6 times in the Big Ten Championship: in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002, and 2003.
