Seton Hall Pirates Information
The Seton Hall Pirates are the sports teams of the Seton Hall University. It is a Roman Catholic university, situated in New Jersey. It is the oldest diocesan American university. It is well-known by its basketball team, its radio station and various educational programs.
The universitys sports teams are usually called the Pirates. The athletes are the participants of the NCAAs (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I and the Big East Conference. There are various sports teams at the Seton Hall University: baseball, basketball, cross country running, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball.

The oldest and the fiercest rival of the Seton Hall Pirates is Rutgers University. The home to the Seton Hall Pirates mens basketball team became the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. The womens basketball team plays at the Walsh Gymnasium.
The Continental Airlines Arena was opened in July of 1981. Originally it was known as the Brendan Byrne Arena, and later, the Meadowlands Arena. It is an indoor sports facility, used for many purposes. It is also the home to the New Jersey Devils NHL hockey team and the New Jersey Nets NBA basketball team. The arenas seating capacity is more than nineteen thousand people for hockey games, more than twenty thousand for college basketball, and a max of twenty thousand for various concerts.
The Walsh Gymnasium, the home to the Seton Hall Pirates womens basketball team, is an arena in South Orange (New Jersey) used for different purposes. It was opened in 1939 and seats only 2.6 thousand spectators. The mens basketball team also played here, until they moved to the Continental Airlines Arena. The arena is named after the Right Rev. Thomas J. Walsh.
The Seton Hall University is best known for its successful basketball program. In 1953 the Seton Hall Pirates became the winners of the NIT (the National Invitation Tournament) competition. In 1989 the basketball team reached the NCAA final game. Unfortunately, they lost to the Michigan team with the score 80-79. Recently, in the 2006 NCAA competition the Seton Hall Pirates left the tournament, as they lost in the first round to the Wichita State Shockers. Consequently, the head coach was fired (Louis Orr). The team wanted to replace him with Jim Larranaga, but the later rejected the offer. Finally, Bobby Gonzalez from Manhattan College was hired.
Among the notable Seton Hall University alumni there are several basketball players. The most famous are Andre Barrett Samuel Dalembert, Adrian Griffin, Eddie Griffin (current NBA players), Andrew Gaze (former Australian basketball player), and others.
