Background Information
St John's Red Storm is the name of the basketball team of St. Johns University, which has quite a long tradition in intercollegiate athletics. St. John's represents a private Roman Catholic university of New York City. The primary campus of the school is situated in Jamaica, Queens. St. John's University is also the largest Catholic university in the country.
The mens basketball program of St. Johns became the first intercollegiate program and appeared in 1907. At the very beginning, the so-called Wonder Five made the team well-known. At that time the director of athletics and also of the football program, coach Ray Lynch asked his players to wear red uniform for games. The local newspapers caught it up, and named the St. Johns athletic teams, the Red Men. The new nickname for the team, the Red Storm, appeared at the beginning of 90s and is relevant up to this day. St. Johns University has trained its athletic teams into one of the most powerful in the East.
