Orange NCAA Basketball

The school appeared in National Invitation Tournaments in 1946 and 1950, and firstly appeared in the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 1957. The modern era of Syracuse basketball began after the arrival of Dave Bing, who led the team to the National Invitation Tournament. In 1966 he led the team to the 2nd appearance in NCAA Tournament, and the team got to the regional final.

The Syracuse also stayed competitive with Roy Danforth as a coach. The team made NIT appearances in 1967, 1971, and 1972. In 1973, under the named coach, the team started a new period of constant NCAA appearances, marked by the participation in the Final Four in 1975. The 1975 was casually referred to as Roy's Runts. In 1979 Syracuse became a founding member of the Big East Conference together with St. John's University, Georgetown University, and Providence College. This was also the beginning of a new and major rivalry, and during the next ten seasons, these two schools met eight times in the Big East Tournament, four times in the finals, and met numerous times on national television during the regular season.

When the team leaders became Coleman, Seikaly, Douglas, Stephen Thompson and Billy Owens, the University increased its streak of NCAA appearances up to 10 seasons. The streak was ended in 1993 by the NCAA sanctions arising from an incident with a booster.

The University got back to the NCAA's in 1994 and 1995, when the team was headed by guard Lawrence Moten and forward/center John Wallace. In 1996, the team advanced to the 3rd Final Four appearance, where it played quite impressively.

The 1997 team gained victories in 19 games, while the 1998, 1999 and 2000 teams all received NCAA bids. In 2000, the University compiled its All Century Team, naming its greatest players of the 20th century. The team advanced to the fourth consecutive NCAA tournament in 2001, however got back to the National Invitation Tournament in 2002.

Until today, the Syracuse men's basketball team has appeared in 31 NCAA events, with 4 Final Fours and one NCAA Tournament Championship. The team had 10 National Invitation Tournaments and won 2 early national championships. The program has raised 2 Hall of Fame players, namely Vic Hanson and Dave Bing, and one Hall of Fame coach, Jim Boeheim.
