Texas A&M Basketball
The Texas A&M Aggies don’t really introduction. They are one of the most prominent sports schools in the nation. However, while their
football team dominates most of the public interest, the basketball team looms largely in the background. As a program that started in the 1910s, Texas A&M basketball enjoyed moderate to above average success. They were a perennial powerhouse within their own conference, often finishing in the Top 3.
more During the Dana X. Bible years (1920-1927) the Aggies finished first-place in their conference three years in a row (1920-1923). After Bible left in 1927, however, the team’s rankings slowly declined. Often, they finished 5th or worse. This, of course, was before the induction of the NCAA Championship Tournament in 1939. For over twenty years after the first NCAA tournament the Aggies were a decent team, neither dominant nor an easy victory from the opponent’s perspective. But 1963 started the Metcalf Era. Shelby Metcalf became the head coach for the start of the 1963 season and his impact was immediate. The Aggies went 13-1 and won their first Southwest Conference Title in thirteen years. Throughout the Metcalf Era, the Aggies flourished; winning 6 Conference titles and made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, going as far as the Sweet Sixteen Round. After Metcalf was let go (despite being the most successful Aggie coach ever, 438-306) the Aggies went through their “Dark Ages,” in which they made only one postseason appearance and finished above .500 in conference play twice. But a new season gives new hope, especially since the Aggies seem to be going through a modern resurgence. Just last season (2007-2008) Texas A&M finished with a 25-11 record in conference play for the first time in many years.
