Virginia Tech Hokies basketball teams represent Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, which is usually referred to as Virginia Tech. The University runs 17 other kinds of sports and participates at the NCAA Division I level. Virginia Tech's men's sports teams also specialize in baseball, football, track and field, cross country, swimming, golf, soccer , tennis, and wrestling. Virginia Tech's women's sports also include lacrosse, cross country, swimming, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field.

This year is his 4th season as the Virginia Tech Hokies head men's basketball coach. Last season the team had to cope with some personal problems, however they managed to get through some difficult spots, and remained a competitive team in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The player Coleman Collins has been chosen to the John R. Wooden Award for the 2006-07 Preseason Top 50 Candidates list. This prize is awarded each year to the best mens basketball college player. Last year Collins revitalized the games of the Hokies, as well as being 2nd in scoring. According to the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason voting, the team of Hokies were chosen 6th.
Virginia Tech's women's basketball team is coached by Beth Dunkelberg. It is constantly in postseason and has received a place to the NCAA championship in every of the last 4 seasons. The team has been in postseason play each year since the 1997-1998 seasons.
Both Virginia Tech Hokies basketball teams play games at Cassell Coliseum, which is a huge, multi-purpose arena in Blacksburg, Virginia, having a possibility to accommodate up to 10,000 people. The arena opened in 1961 and was made to replace the much smaller War Memorial Gymnasium.
