Washington State Cougars Recent Surge
The Washington State Cougars, conference members of the
PAC-10, have only one national championship under their belt. That was back in 1917. Since then the Cougars have been off and on, mostly off. They experienced some surges in quality however. In 1941, they once again became Championship game bound only to lose to
Wisconsin 39-34 (historical note: This is the lowest scoring game in National Championship history).
more After this season the Cougars once more fell dormant; a dormancy that would last for over 30 years. In the mid to late 70s, George Raveling would take charge of the program and become one of Washington State’s winningest coaches of all time. Because of Raveling, Washington State played in front of its largest crowds ever, and reached its first NCAA tournament since the 1941 loss. Raveling left, however, in 1983 and the Cougars returned to their slump. Insult to injury was added when they lost large amounts of fan support in the 1990s.
But now they’re back, riding high off of two consecutively strong seasons. In 2007 they reached second round play in the tournament, and in 2008 they achieved Sweet Sixteen Status. Cougar fans and Cougar players expect only further improvement in the upcoming 2008-2009 season. Tony Bennett and his all-star staff of assistant coaches will return this season along with the veterans of last year and stars of tomorrow.
