The Wildcats main rival is Arizona State University located in Tempe. Their basketball, football and baseball games were among the hottest events in the NCAA in 2006. Another well known rival of the University of Arizona is the University of California. There has been a strong competition between these two universities in basketball since the early 1990s. The baseball team played its first game in 1904. Three times it won championship in 1976, 1980, and 1986 – all under the head coach Jerry Kindall. Arizona baseball teams made six appearances in the NCAA National Championship title series in 1956, 1959, 1963, 1976, 1980, and 1986. The current head coach of the team is Andy Lopez.

The men's basketball team has been one of the most successful in NCAA since 1983, when Lute Olsen became the head coach. The team has made 22 consecutive appearances in NCAA Tournament, which is the best record in NCAA history. Under the head coach Lute Olson the Wildcats reached the Final Four of the NCAA tournament four times in 1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001. In 1997, the Wildcats defeated the University of Kentucky, winning the NCAA National Championship.

The football team started in 1899 under the name "Varsity" but in 1914 was renamed for the Wildcats. The Wildcats were rather successful during the 1990s leaded by the head coach Dick Tomey. In 1993 the team had its first 10-win season. In 1998 the team defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was ranked 3rd nationally.
