The modern era of football began for the Bulls as a Division III program in 1977. Since the beginning of it the team has had six different coaches. The 1st one of them was Bill Dando, followed by Sam Sanders and James Ward. In 1993 the Buffalo Bulls improved their performance up to a Division I-AA under Coach Ward. The next coach was Craig Cirbus. He returned to his University for the 1995 season, having worked for a long time as an assistant to the notable Coach Joe Paterno. In 1999 the team moved to the Division I-A. Cirbus was replaced by Jim Hofher and later by the well-known Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill for the 2006 season. The University at Buffalo is also noted for its soccer team. In 2005, the men's soccer team achieved the greatest results. The UB made up a 14-3-2 record, having closed the season with eight victories. The Bulls went to the Mid-American Conference competition where they were hit by the Akron Zips team.
