The kind of sports, in which the University of Oklahoma State achieved greatest results, is wrestling. Wrestling's tradition started in the year of 1916 under the coach Edward C. Gallagher. His name is now part of the Gallagher-Iba Arena. With his excellent skills and knowledge of anatomy, he initiated the sport of wrestling at the University. Gallagher worked with the Cowboys until the year of 1940, in which he died of pneumonia. During the 24 years of his tenure, Gallagher made 11 team national titles, 19 undefeated seasons, and received a 138-5-4 winning record. The following coach was Art Griffith and he went on winning two straight national competitions.

Because of World War II, Oklahoma State wrestling was put off for three years. After the war, Griffith worked with the team for 11 years more and helped to gain the victory in 6 more national tournaments at that time. Because of his health problems, Art Griffith left the job and the next coach was Myron Roderick. At the age of 23 years old Roderick became the first coach, who has won a national championship. This happened in the year 1958. 5 more championships were won under Roderick s coaching. In 1970, Myron Roderick advanced to an executive position in the U.S. Wrestling Federation and had to leave the school. A new coach Tommy Chesbro was taken, and under this coach the team won 8 Big Eight awards and 1 national tournament in the period of 15 years. From 1985 to 1991, Joe Seay, the new coach won 5 conference titles and 2 national titles. In 1993, John Smith became the 7th head coach of Oklahoma State Cowboys wrestling team. Smith coached the Cowboys to a national title in the year of 1995 and later 4 consecutive national titles between 2002 - 2006.
