Mariota, Thomas to Lead Loaded Ducks in 2013

After Chip Kelly led the Oregon Ducks to four BCS bowl game berths in the past four years, the program cemented itself as a perennial powerhouse in college football. With Kelly moving on to the NFL, former offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich will take the reins and look to extend the team’s streak of BCS appearances. The team figures to continue its trend of putting up points in bunches considering the fact that Helfrich has engineered the offensive unit since 2009. He will take over a team stacked with talent, including two players who figure to be among the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy next year. After winning the quarterback battle in one of the surprises of the spring last year, Marcus Mariota wowed fans and proved that he was more than capable of handling the high-octane offense. As a freshman, Mariota accounted for an astounding 38 touchdowns in 2012, routinely beating teams with his legs as well as his arm. He will be joined in the backfield by perhaps the most explosive player in the nation, De’Anthony Thomas. Thomas’ speed, power, and agility gave defenses fits last year as the versatile threat racked up 18 scores while splitting time with former backfield mate Kenjon Barner, now graduated.

With plenty of other returning difference-makers from an offense that was ranked in the top three in both points and rushing yards, Oregon will be a matchup nightmare for all of its opponents. The first true test of the season will be a rare home contest with the SEC’s Tennessee Volunteers on Sept 14. The 2013 Oregon football schedule also includes several conference games that will undoubtedly play a large role in ultimately deciding who advances to the Pac-12 Championship Game, including matchups with the Cal Bears (Sept. 28), UCLA Bruins (Oct. 26), and Oregon State Beavers (Nov. 29). Secure a seat inside Autzen Stadium to see the team’s fast-paced offense sprint towards a national championship with Oregon Ducks football tickets from Vivid Seats.
