The University of Alabama at Birmingham is not one of those colleges steeped in the tradition of conference football championships driving the pride of the school since the beginning of the sport. The truth of the Blazers is that they are relative newcomers to the entire NCAA football world. They started up their football program back in the 1990s under the management of head coach Jim Hilyer. They made strides to move up the ranks and were soon sliding backwards when they found themselves under the direction of head coach Watson Brown from 1995 to the 2006 season.

Neil Callaway has taken the reins since 2007 and has not shown any improvement on that backwards slide, however he says that with the developed experience from last year’s many freshmen, more familiarity between staff members, as well as the arrival of the newcomers and the start of the preseason camp that we should soon be seeing a turn in the numbers. The Blazers are hoping for the best and turning their efforts to finding excellence in the 2008-2009 NCAA football season.
