In 2000 the University of Virginia said goodbye to their coach leading them to the most victories, and the coach leading the most wins in ACC history as well, with a 19 year total of 80 wins. The Cavaiers’ George Welsh decided that his health required his attention and the Cavaliers mourned. When he stepped down, the team was looking for someone that would reap the same successes as Welsh, with no small shoes to fill. Al Groh of the New York Jets entered the picture and gave them winning seasons from ’02-’05, but in the 2006 season the ground started giving way somewhat from the firm footing that Virginia was enjoying.
With a 9-4 record in the 2007 season and showing up at the 2008 Gator Bowl, hope has not been chased away from the fans of the Cavaliers. Their team has held on to some non senior major supporting players from last year and are ready to put their best foot forward for the 2008 season and push their way into 2009 with a force that has been shadowed, but is returning.
