The Wisconsin Badgers represent a number of athletic teams from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This athletic program of Division I-A NCAA includes teams playing football, ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, crew, cross country, soccer, tennis, wrestling, swimming, track and field, softbal and golf. The Badgers have at their disposal some major on-campus facilities where the games take place. The Wisconsin Field House, Camp Randall Stadium, and the Kohl Center are the most popular ones. The Badgers compete in the the United States' oldest Division I college athletic conference known as Big Ten Conference in all sports with the exception of men's ice hockey.

The team is currentlly directed by Barry Alvarez, who is a former head coach of the football team. As far as the

traditional colors of the team is concerned, they are red and white. The mascot of the Badgers is called "Buckingham U. Badger" or "Bucky Badger".

The version of the team, currently known as Bucky, was first drawn in the year 1940 by Art Evans. That was the time when the badger went by names such as Buddy, Benny, Bobby, Bouncey and Bernie. The department's publicity director, Art Lentz, made a decision to bring the mascot to life. However the original badger mascot was rather difficult to control. The live badger escaped several times during important occasions and according to the fan and players wish the mascot of the team was retired to the Madison Zoo. The live badger was replaced with a small raccoon named Regdab.

In the year 1949, Connie Conrad, who was a student of the university's art department, molded a paper-mache head of a badger. Cheerleader and gymnast Bill Sagal was directed by chair Bill Sachse, to wear the outfit at one of the games. There was a contest aimed at naming the popular mascot. Buckingham U. Badger, or Bucky was the winner. Actually the name came from the lyrics of a song dedicated to the football team that sounded like "buck right through that line."

The Wisconsin Badgers football team is often treated as the most famous and best-supported of the Wisconsin varsity teams. It is one of the most successful in the Big Ten teams. The Wisconsin Badgers have managed to win 3 Rose Bowls and 3 Big Ten Championships.
