However, Carolina turned out to be one of National Hockey League's biggest surprises, showing their best season in the franchise's 34-year history. They finished with a new 52-22-8 record and 112 points, demolishing the previous franchise record set by the Whalers in 1986-1987. The team won in conference quarterfinals over the Montreal Canadiens (4-2), later defeated the New Jersey Devils (4-1) in the conference semifinals, and at last, in the finals they managed to beat the Buffalo Sabres (4-3). Thus, the Hurricanes became the Stanley Cup Champions bating the Edmonton Oilers with 4-3. Two Carolina players beat their own records: Eric Staal set franchise’s new record for most points in one postseason (28), and Cam Ward – for most shutouts in one postseason (2).
