Carolina Hurricanes February 2007 UpdateMany Hurricanes’ fans were not optimistic about the previous season. However, Carolina turned out to be one of National Hockey League's biggest surprises, showing their best season in the franchise's 34-year history. They finished with a new 52-22-8 record and 112 points, demolishing the previous franchise record set by the Whalers in 1986-1987. The team won in conference quarterfinals over the Montreal Canadiens (4-2), later defeated the New Jersey Devils (4-1) in the conference semifinals, and at last, in the finals they managed to beat the Buffalo Sabres (4-3). Thus, the Hurricanes became the Stanley Cup Champions bating the Edmonton Oilers with 4-3. Two Carolina players beat their own records: Eric Staal set franchise’s new record for most points in one postseason (28), and Cam Ward – for most shutouts in one postseason (2).
