Behind the guidance of head coach Darryl Sutter, the Kings are behind the Anaheim Ducks for second place in the Pacific Division, and as of April 12, stand as the fourth seed in the Western Conference. If the NHL standings remain the same, Los Angeles will find itself in a supremely entertaining matchup with the fifth-seeded San Jose Sharks in the first round. The Kings and the Sharks have been jockeying for position in the Pacific Division throughout the NHL Season, and the clash would be a fitting way for each team to begin the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Thankfully for the faithful fans that have had their fingers crossed to purchase Kings playoff tickets, L.A. has avoided the Stanley Cup Finals hangover throughout the lockout-shortened, 48-game season. In fact, the team’s focus on the task at hand has helped them to reside in the top 10 in goals per game, goals against, and power play percentage. It’s been the usual suspects leading the L.A. Kings playoff charge, as Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards, Justin Williams, and Dustin Brown have played like true Stanley Cup Champions, but perhaps the biggest surprise en route to the NHL Playoffs was newcomer Jeff Carter, who has made his presence felt in grand fashion by leading the Los Angeles in goals scored. To secure a top seed out west, the Kings will have to play strong in their remaining games, which include matchups against Anaheim (April 13), the Dallas Stars (April 21), Minnesota Wild (April 23), and the season finale against the Sharks in front of the home crowd at the Staples Center (April 27).
