About the Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens is one of the most successful and titled teams in the history of the NHL as well as one of oldest ones. It started its career even before the NHL exisisted, which was formed only in 1917. The Canadiens got to the top 24 times and they won eleven more Stanley Cups than the next most effective Toronto Maple Leafs team. Now it is one of the so-called NHL «Original six». The Montreal Canadiens had the other names both in French and in English, but the most frequent are the Habs and the Flying Frenchmen.

The Montreal Canadiens won its first Stanley Cup in 1916 , having defeated the Portland Rosebuds in the final match. During the next 15 years they succeeded three times in 1924 and then two years on end in 1930 and 1931.

This success was followed by a 5-year downturn. Though there was some progress in 1936-1937 season the series of misfortunes still continued. Finally with Maurice Richard, Hector Blake and Elmer Lach in the team, the Habs won the Cup again in 1944. The following few seasons were quite successful for the Montreal Canadiens: despite they didnt win the Final in 1945 they showed high-quality and effective hockey, by the way Richard produced great goal-scores. This effective hockey-playing was followed by another Stanley Cup (the 6th one).

The 50s are considered to be the most successful period in the Montreal Canadiens career. They won six Cups and 5 of them were gained 5 years on the end.

The end of 60s, 70s and 80s was quite a productive period for the Flying Frenchmen as well, they constantly reached the playoffs and appeared in the finals. Only once they missed the finals. The Hubs won quite a number of Stanley Cups and really proved their high class.

The 24th, and the latest one, Stanley Cup was got 1993, when the Habs defeated the Los Angeles Kings.

The Flying Frenchmen have great plans for future, they want to host the World Junior Hockey Championship, the NHL draft and the NHL All-Star Game .
