The San Jose Sharks a professional hockey team founded in 1990 and based in San Jose, California. The team plays in the NHL. The name was given because of the big number of sharks living in waters of California.
The team entered the National Hockey League in 1991. The Sharks played at the Cow Palace and Daly City during their first two seasons and were nearly the worst team in the league with 71 losses in 1992-1993. After that George Kingston, the teams coach lost his job.
For the season of 1993-1994 the San Jose Sharks moved to the HP Pavilion. They entered the season quite successfully with 0-8-1 result in the first 9 games but lost to the Detroit Red Wings. They started well by winning 4 games consistently but loosing the first one. They got into playoff and lost to the Red Wings.
In the season of 1995-1996 the Sharks were last in the Pacific Division and missed the playoffs. There were made some important changes in the team. The Sharks traded Larionov and Ozolinsh. The team acquired a new forward Owen Nolan and some other players. Jim Willey became a new coach. But the next season was as bad as the previous. The Sharks were the last and won only 27 games.
In 1997-1998 the team got to the playoffs but did not advanced beyond the first round. They had a new coach Darryl Sutter and a new goaltender Mike Wernom whom they had acquired from the Red Wings and who won the Conn Smythe Trophy the next season. The Sharks finished the season of 1999-2000 with a winning record for the first time and later were eliminated by the Dallas Stars.
In the 2000-2001 playoffs the Sharks were defeated by the Blues in the first round. That year Evgeni Nabokov, the teams goalie, won the Calder Memorial Tropy.
In 2007-2002 the Sharks got the first Pacific Division title. They beat the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round and had to play with the Colorado Avalanche in the second. It was a spectacular match. All tickets were sold and the tribunes overcrowded. But the Sharks lost the game.
Shortly after, the team was sold to local investors. The change of the owner and some other difficulties made the team to miss the playoffs in 2002-2003.
2003-2004 can be considered the San Hose Sharks best season with the biggest number of tickets sold. Christian Ehrhoff and Niko Dimitrakos came to the team. The sharks won the Pacific Division championship and got 104 points the third best record. They were playing in the Western Conference but were defeated by the Calgary Flames in the conference finals.
In the season of 2005-2006 the Sharks also got into the playoffs and in the second round were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers.
During the 2006 there were made some significant changes to improve teams defense. Some young promising players were acquired such as Curtis Brown and Mike Grier.
