During the 2006 offseason, the Sharks made some significant changes in order to improve their defense and team merit. San Jose signed contracts with Mike Grier from the Buffalo Sabres and Shark Curtis Brown from the Chicago Blackhawks, two forwards notable for their defense. Later, Doug Wilson traded their top offensive defenseman during the previous season, Tom Preissing, to the Senators for center Mark Bell of the Blackhawks. Wilson then traded winger Ekman to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The following month, the San Jose Sharks signed veterans Mathieu Biron and Patrick Traverse. The club also signed contracts with many other players, including Graham Mink and Scott Ferguson for their American Hockey League affiliate, as well as forwards Mark Bell, Ville Nieminen, Mike Grier, and Curtis Brown. In October 2006, San Jose acquired Vladimir Malakhov and a first-round conditional draft for Jim Fahey and Alexander Korolyuk.
Several current San Jose Sharks players became the franchise top-ten scoring leaders. They include Patrick Marleau (scoring 413 points, 187 goals, and 226 assists) and Jonathan Cheechoo (156 points, 93 goals, and 63 assists).
