During their eight years of futility, the team finished with a record above .500 just three times, making the stretch especially difficult for one of the most storied franchises in the league. But this year’s Maple Leafs have put themselves in a position to bring that drought to an end, and have given fans in Toronto a reason to cheer again as they are currently on the verge of clinching a berth into the NHL Playoffs 2013. The team has used the strike-shortened season to its advantage, feasting on Eastern Conference opponents as it raced out to a 23-13-5 start to open the year.
Toronto must first put the finishing touches on a postseason berth before they can officially celebrate the historic achievement. And with the Eastern Conference playoff picture still in flux, a strong end to the season can improve the team’s seeding dramatically. At this late stage in the season, it is still a possibility that the Maple Leafs could draw their chief rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, in a first-round series. Such a battle would be one of the most highly anticipated in recent memory, and would the first time in 34 years that the two teams met in the postseason. Even though the franchise has not hoisted the Stanley Cup since the 1966-67 season, hopes remain high that the 2013 edition of the team can break that drought as well. The Air Canada Centre will be rocking when the postseason rolls around, so be sure to witness all the action live by purchasing Maple Leafs playoff tickets from Vivid Seats today.
