After a disappointing last-place 2005-2006 season (only 29 wins versus 41 losses and 12 overtime losses), the Capitals started the offseason with some transactions. At the 2006 trade deadline, Witt was traded to the Nashville Predators. In the 2006 offseason, Halpern left Washington and joined the Dallas Stars. Chris Clark was chosen the Capitals' new team captain. Alexander Ovechkin returned to the club after having spent a year in Russia; he scored a hat trick in his second game with the Washington Capitals. Richard Zedník returned to Washington in 2006-07 after a 16-goal and 14-assist 2005-06 record in Montreal. The team also signed a contract with former Senator Brian Larouge as well as Donald Brashear. During 2006, the Capitals also signed defensemen Brian Pothier and John Erskine, and forwards Kris Beech, Donald Brashear.
