Mickelson Looking to Defend Title at 2014 British Open
One year after capturing the first British Open championship of his career, Phil Mickelson will look to secure his first major of 2014 when action gets underway at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, July 17-20. With a handful of sites across England and Scotland currently in the rotation for hosting duties, the Royal Liverpool Golf Club has not been used since 2006, though it had reprised the role several times prior dating all the way back to 1897. Like this year’s course for the PGA Championship, the last golfer to prevail at the British Open when it was held in Merseyside was none other than Tiger Woods, who thanks to a speedier than expected recovery from back surgery, will be on hand to compete. Though Woods has notably been without a major championship since 2008, he has prevailed three times previously at The Open in 2000, 2005, and 2006.
Mickelson’s victory in 2013 marked the first for the United States since Stewart Cink in 2009, as the likes of Ernie Els, Darren Clarke, and Louis Oosthuizen all claimed victory during the years in between. Ahead of the 2014 Open Championship, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has emerged as a favorite to win it all, which would mark the first such victory of his career and first major championship of the year as well.
