The Shell Houston Open was already one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the PGA Tour schedule leading up the Masters Tournament in April, but with the announcement that Rory McIlroy had committed to the field, the excitement turned up a notch. The 2013 Shell Houston Open is set to go down at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas, from March 28th to March 31st, and the world’s top-ranked player is set to compete against a phenomenal field for the chance to win $1,080,000. Overall, this will be the Irishman’s third time playing the event, but the first time since he became a global sensation. Back in 2010, he missed the cut, and in 2009, he tied for 19th place, so this year he’ll be looking to redeem himself. However, the going certainly won’t be easy for McIlroy, as many of the world’s top players will be there to challenge him, including No. 5 Louis Oosthuizen, No. 8 Lee Westwood, and No. 12 Phil Mickelson.
McIlroy picked Chinquapin Preparatory School, which serves economically disadvantaged youths in the Houston area, to be the beneficiary of his foundation's 6 Bags Project at this year’s tournament. McIlroy will play with a special golf bag that features the Chinquapin logo, and then he’ll auction it off through his foundation to raise money. In last year’s tournament, Hunter Mahan was able to come away with the win and snag the $1,080,000 in prize money. The United States National outplayed Carl Pettersson over the last four holes and shot a stellar sixteen-under par for the tournament. With McIlroy and other top-ranked players in the world bringing their A-game to Houston, this year’s tourney should be just as intense, so make sure to claim your 2013 Shell Houston Open tickets from Vivid Seats.
