About The Shell-Houston Open
The Shell Houston Open is a golf contest, which is one of the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Tour championships. Under this name the golf event has been known since 1992. Being financially supported by the Shell and Houston Golf Association, the contest got its current name of the Shell Houston Open.
The Shell Houston Open tournament was also known as the Houston Open, the Houston Classic, the Houston Classic International, the Michelob-Houston Open, the Houston Coca-Cola Open, the Big "I" Houston Open, and the Independent Insurance Agent Open.

The first golf game took place in 1946 at River Oaks Country Club. Then the tournament was known as the Houston Open. In the period of time from 1949 to 1973 the contest was held in a variety of places: Memorial Park Golf Course, Pine Forest Country Club, BraeBurn Country Club, Memorial Park, Sharpstown Country Club, Champions Golf Club, Westwood Country Club. Since 1973 the golf game was hosted by another state for 30 years. First, the event was held at Quail Valley Country Club in Missouri City, Texas. Then in 1975, it changed the site to Woodlands Country Club in the Woodlands, Texas. And since 1984 it took place in the Tournament Players Club. Finally, in 2003 the Shell Houston Open started to use its present golf course.
During the recent years two outstanding sportsmen Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby stood out in the Shell Houston Open. Vijay Singh won the Shell Houston Open in 2002, 2004, and 2005; and Stuart Appleby advanced in 1999. He scored the last Shell Houston Open and gained a $990,000 prize.
Appleby started his sports career in 1992, and in 1995 he already scored two Nike Tours and managed to become a seed for the PGA Tour. Altogether he has scored 8 PGA Tour and now he is considered to be one of the leading golfers, according to the Official World Golf Rankings.
