About The Players Championship
The PLAYERS Championship is a golf tournament held annually in March and is part of the PGA TOUR. In 1974 the inaugural event was held at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia. Later it was moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975, and then to Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1976. Starting from 1977, the event was moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Initially, it was played at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course. After 1982 it was held in the neighborhood of Sawgrass Country Club, at the Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass.

The authorities of the Players Championship grant the highest award fund in comparison with other golf tournaments. In 2005 it constituted $8 million. The tournament is at times called by the mass media the Fifth Major; however it does not have an official major status. The field generally comprises practically all of the top dozen ranked golf players around the globe. Still it cannot be called an official major event on the European Tour. It is sponsored by the Deutsche Bank.
The champion of the competition gets a fixed allocation of 40 points for his Official World Golf Ranking, which is the greatest number compared to any competition except the majors, in which champions receive fifty points. At the same time, the champions of 3 individual World Golf Championships get between 36 and 38 points. Besides, the champion of The Players Championship gets a 5 year exemption on the PGA Tour, 3 year participation in the Masters Tournament, 3 year exemption to The Open Championship, and a PGA Championship and U.S. Open invitation for that year.
The Players Championship is best known for having the only most famous hole in professional golf. It is known to golf fans worldwide as the Island Green and has become TPC Sawgrass signature hole.
In the next 2007 season, The Players Championship will be put off for May.
