The Valero Texas Open is one of the official competitions on the PGA Tour. The history of the contest goes as far as 1922. In 1922 it was originally called the Texas Open Championship. Nowadays it is held at Resort Course at La Cantera Golf Club, San Antonio, Texas. The course became a witness of the record-breaking 254 shot by Tommy Armour III in 2003. A great many outstanding golfers became champions of the tournament (Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer, who was lucky to win it in three consecutive years).
The Valero Texas Open is considered to be one of the competitions, where it is very easy to shoot low.
The event has been called the Texas Open most of the time. One could come across some similar name, but the essence of the game remained the same. From the foundation of the championship until 1940, it took place at Brackenridge Park Golf Course, except the years 1927-1928, when it was held at Willow Springs Golf Course. Later the event was transferred from Brackenridge Park GC to Willow Springs GC. From 1950 to 1994 the remarkable golf event was held in a variety of places, e.g. Brackenridge Park GC, Ft. Sam Houston Golf Course, Ft. Sam Houston GC, Oak Hills Country Club, Pecan Valley Golf Club, Woodlake Golf Club, and Oak Hills CC. And only since 1995, it has been held at the present place at La Cantera GC.
