At the end of every school year the 8 best college baseball teams battle it out in the double elimination format of the College World Series. The College World Series schedule has gone through some retooling throughout its years. Originally it was a “pure” double elimination tournament in which the last surviving team was crowned champion. However, the format then changed to two brackets of four teams, playing in double elimination until the winners from each bracket faced off in a single championship game. Again, in 1999, the tournament was expanded into 64 teams nationwide split into different regions until they funneled down into the final 8. The current format of the College World Series game dates follows the new template set into effect in 2003, where the championship game is decided by a best-of-three series.
