Like a fine wine, Duke Blue Devils basketball only seems to get better with time. But, at the same time, early Duke Basketball was also fairly talented. It’s like taking an already valuable wine, then letting it accrue in value. So it is with Duke. In their inchoate years, 1906-1912, the Blue Devils tallied a 30-17 overall record, and from that point on they have rarely posted a season that wasn’t far over .500. But their best years came (and still come) at the hands of head coach Mike Krzyzewski. In 1980, when Krzyzewski took charge of the Blue Devil squad, the team was in a slump. In his first three years, Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils garnered a disappointing 38-47 record. Any doubts of Krzyzewski’s coaching abilities, however, were soon put to rest. The next ten seasons, Mike Krzyzewski and company achieved 20-plus wins in each season, 3 of which were 30-plus…and oh yeah, something like multiple final four appearances and 2 National Titles (1991,1992). Since then, it’s been much of the same: more 20-plus win seasons, numerous more NCAA Tournament and Final Four appearances, and yet another notch under the National Title belt (2001). This year, Coach K and the boys are back, looking for that 4th title in school history…after all, it has been about 8 years since the last one.
