The national football team of Mexico is the Mexico National Soccer Team which is under the control of the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol. The Mexico National Football team had qualified for the last four World Cups and on the whole it had qualified for thirteen World Cups. In the last four World Cups this team had entered the second round but had not made any further progress. Their best results were reaching the Quaterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in 1970 and 1986, both of which were hosted by Mexico. They have played well in the Copa America right from the time they were invited in 1993 by the CONMEBOL.
In 1930, Mexico participated for the first time in the World Cup. They did not participate after that for many years till the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Untill 1970, Mexico did not make much impact in the World Cups. They could not play well against the South American and European teams and could win only one out five tournaments. One of their team memebers, goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal was the first player ever to play in consecutive FIFA World Cups. In 1990, Mexico was disqualified from the FIFA World Cup. The reason for them being disqualified was that they used players who were over the allowed age limit.
During the time that Mexico was coached by Manuel Lapuente, the team came first in the CONCACAF side. The team hosted and won its first FIFA World Cup in 1999 and Cuauhtémoc Blanco was awarded the Golden Shoe award along with Ronaldhino.
