National Finals Rodeo News

NFR History and Format

The National Finals Rodeo is easily the greatest and most important rodeo event of the year, which is probably why it’s commonly referred to as the “World Series of Rodeo” or the “Superbowl of Rodeo.” Annually held in the first week of December, the National Finals of Rodeo features the best that the sport can offer: Bareback riding, Steer wrestling, Team roping, Saddle bronco riding, Tie-down roping, Bull riding, and Barrel racing (the latter being the only event exclusive to women). The National Finals Rodeo was created 1958 as a way to put a “capping,” championship event on the whole rodeo season. Qualifiers include the nation’s top 50 money-winners in each of the above-mentioned events. For ten days, the athletes will ride, rope, tie, and race their way in order to be crowned the undisputed champion of their respective event. The first NFR, however, was held a year after the National Finals Rodeo created the event. In 1959, America witnessed its first NFR in Dallas, Texas. After remaining in Dallas through 1961, the NFR then moved to other cities like Los Angeles and Oklahoma City, where it really made large leaps in popularity. This year, as it has been since 1985, Las Vegas’ Thomas and Mack Center will house the event and once more give further popularity to the sport of rodeo.
