La Boheme Background Information

La Boheme is one of the more popular of the operas in the master opera selections. The opera is composed of music created by Giacomo Puccini with libretto by Mr. Luigi Illica as well as Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera is loosely based upon Murger's classic Scene de le Vie de Bohame. This was Puccini's forth opera as well as the second one of his last four most mature creations. It made its debut in Turin Italy February 1 of 1896.

This opera fosters more upon Murger's modern adaptation of his classic novel created for the stage in the year 1849, then it does on the basic novel itself. But with Murger's play restricted by copyright rulings that failed to affect his novel it was insisted that scenes de le Vie da Boheme created the basis of their new material.

The opera possesses many important differences as opposed to both of Murger's creations. His novel possessed no unifying plan or plot but instead presented a series of totally unrelated skits, the play unfortunately possessed to many of its planned subplots to be useable as a modern opera. In addition, the character of Mimi in the opera was a combination of two Murger characters known as Francine and Mimi. The novel portrays Mimi as dying in a hospital with no one with her - she was alone, as opposed to the on stage version of this situation which was very different. It must be noted that a multitude of situations and events, which occur in the onstage opera appears to be located in totally different chapters of the novel. Several of the operatic events that appear to be of significant importance on the stage are minor within the novel.

The basic plot of the opera centers amid a small community of artists living in Paris France and its focal point is particularly flanked by the romantic type relationship of grisette Mimi and the poet Rodolfo. Similar to the analogous relationship of the roommate of Rodolfo, the beautiful Musetta and Marcello, Rodolfo and Mimi’s love does not survive without some sort of worldly conflict. When the finish to the opera arrives the pair are tragically united as Mimi sadly returns to her garret and this is where she dies being surrounded by her closest friends. There are several musical devices which emphasize the libretto consisting of a common language which has turned poetic. As an example, Marcello and Rudolfo have to burn Marcello’s own plays to obtain warmth, it was then the orchestra began depicting the quickly reviving fire with its brilliant display of texture during the pizzicato strings and its detached woodwind and its brass chords.
