Through the years, the Lord of the Dance continues to wow audiences, boost ticket sales, and become a box-office hit. The Irish musical which is also a dance production was created by Michael Flatley himself. Flatley also stars the show. Moreover this Irish-American dancer have created chroreographed and produced the entire musical himself.
Michael Flatley first found his ticket to fame through a lead role in “Riverdance”. However, a disagreement regarding creative control broke out which forced him to leave the show before it hit. But Flatley was able to bounce back from the mishap and create his own musical ticket. He wanted to put up a musical which can be played on arenas rather than in typical theatrical venues. This inspired him to come up with an acapella number which would give ticket to name “Planet Ireland.” This dance routine can be seen at the finale of Lord of the Dance. Thus it took a full six months to bring Flatley’s concept onto the stage, while auditions have been constantly held in SFX City Theatre, Dublin.
The story revolves are the “Lord of the Dance” character who fights off “Don Dorcha” who is the evil dark lord in the story. The latter threatens to take over Planet Ireland. The Lord of the Dance has a little spirit as his ticket to defeat the evil lord. Apart from this main theme, a “Love Vs. Lust” theme is also present in the show which is artistically expressed through dance. This theme is evident between Saoirse, “the Irish Cailin” who fights her real love with Morrigan, “the Temptress.” for the Lord of the Dance.
Over all, the story is based on certain Irish folklore and also a bit of some Biblical references.
The year after its first showing, which was in 1997, the Lord of the Dance found its way to ticket into the Oscars. In addition to this, the show also added another troupe of dancers as a ticket to prevail touring all over Europe and North America.
On 1999, Flatley finally found a ticket to enter world of Disney. He signed a contract that year stating that the Lord of the Dance will be performing at Epcot, which is located at Disney World, for that year’s summer season. On the following year, the show was once again asked to perform at the same venue for the summer.
