The action of the musical takes place in New York in 1959. It is the premiere of a new Max play "Funny Boy" by name. Most of the spectators do not enjoy it and the show closes up. Max, the former King of Broadway sings to the people about his attainments and says that he will go back to King of Broadway.
In the following episode Leo Bloom, comes to Max's office to have a look at his accounting books. Nevertheless, some time later, one of Max's investors comes in. The investor is an old lady who begins to flirt with Max.
Max tries to stop it; however the lady grants him money for his play. Leo tells Max about his dream to be a Broadway Producer and tells him that he has found an error in one of the books: Max raised $62,000 for the play "Funny Boy", while it only was $60,000 worth. After several recalculations, Max and Leo begin together to see a way how a producer can raise money with a failure play. Max starts thinking hard and a great idea comes to his witty mind. He proposes a curious scheme of becoming reach and getting 2 million dollars.
However, Leo denies helping Max in his plan and gets back to work with the books at Whitehall and Marks. Quite soon he comprehends that his job is awful, leaves the job, and comes back to Max and tries to fulfill the plan. They come to a house of Franz in Greenwich Village to try to get the rights for his play. They find him on top of the roof of his house with his birds. The two heroes manage to get their agreement signed only after having sung Adolf Hitler's favorite song.
In the long run all the preparations for the play are made and the premiere begins. The curtain is up. The great producers Max and Leo watch their play begin. Unfortunately, the play was so campy that the spectators mistakenly took it for a comedy and it was a smashing success.
Max and Leo go back to the office while Roger and Carmen arrive to congratulate them with their success. At that very time the two were fighting over the books. Franz arrives astonished by the image of Hitler in the play and holds a pistol. The police arrive immediately and take away Franz, Max and the books. Nevertheless, Leo has the time to hide and later takes the two million dollars and run away with it just like it had been planned.
While in prison, Max receives a card from Leo and recollects the whole play. At the trial Max pleads guilty; however Ulla and Leo come and ensure the judge that Max is a noble man who is not able to hurt anybody. The judge believes the tale and makes a decision not to divide the two friends and send both of them prison for 5 years together with Franz. In prison, they compose a new play under the name Prisoners of Love. The play is shown at Broadway as soon as they are pardoned by the Governor. The two producers continue to write Broadway musicals and, at last become very popular.
