American Idol is a singing contest aiming to determine the best unknown young singer in the country. Recently it has become one of the most popular music contests in the world. The project was created by Simon Fuller and developed together with Simon Jones. The first season of American Idols was started in June 2002. In 2005, the same year it became 1 on Nielsen Ratings.
The host of the show is Ray Seacrest. It might be interesting to learn some details of this contest. In the beginning the participants have a preliminary contest where they are selected for their singing and performing talent. The participants who pass the preliminaries are then assessed by three major judges who are Simon Cowel, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Such assessment sessions are usually held at convention centers in different big cities. To participate one must be U.S. citizen from 16 to 28 years. Besides, the contestants are not allowed to have any current recording agreements.
After the season is finished the winner signs a contract with major recording company and receives 1 million dollars. Then a compilation album is made featuring the top twelve contestants. Usually in July of the same year the ten top contestants start a tour over the United States visiting nearly 40 cities. They gather the largest stadiums and arenas and armies of fans buy tickets log before the show to be sure they will see their Idols. Usually by winter the debut albums of some contestants appear.
Needless to say, that American Idol has become a part of the national culture of the US. And as any other cultural phenomenon, the contest has its deep roots which originate from quite long ago. For example, now one will hardly remember 'Ted Mack and the Original Amateur Hour,' which introduced to the American culture, better to say, to the American stage, such remarkable singers as Pat Boone and Gladys Knight. Also, 'The Gong Show,' which brought up Cheryl Lynn, a hit singer. What about 'Star Search' and some of its participants, for example Tiffany and Sinbad
'American Idol' show is the one which successfully promotes young talents, gives them a remarkable opportunity to show themselves to the world of music, acquire fans and record CDs of their own. This show is a real star-maker which helped some artists (Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood) become famous and now sell thousands of tickets around the nation.
The last years top ten were: Taylor Hicks(the winner), Katharine McPhee, Elliot Yamin, Chris Daughty, Paris Bennet, Kellie Picker, Ace Young, Bucky Covington, Mandisa, Lisa Tucker, Kevin Covais and Melissa McGhee. The next 6th season will start in January 2007.
Eventhough the show is regularly broadcasted, a broadcast can not be compared to a live show which you can enjoy sitting in a concert-hall together with a number of others, discussing, arguing, simply sharing opinions. This is a real vivid and exciting show which has to be seen with ones own eyes. To do that, just order your tickets online via Vividseats.com, online ticket broker.
