The American pop singer Clay Aiken (the actual name is Clayton Holmes Grissom) was born on November 30, 1978. Aiken became popular during the second series of the well-known television program American Idol in 2003. After the end of the program, RCA Records proposed Aiken a recording contract, and as a result his first album "Measure of a Man" was released in 2003. According to the number of units sold, Clay became the most successful second-award finisher in history of the show. Besides that, out of all the American Idol alumni, Aiken holds the title of the alumnus with the second highest total CDs sold.
Before his participation in American Idol show, Aikens demo albums usually had a number of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) and some gospel songs. Since the show, Aiken has not recorded any contemporary Christian songs. Traditionally, each year he performed several CCM songs at concerts, especially the Christmas ones, the concerts usually consisted of both temporal and sacred songs. In his book Aiken depicts his way to God and his church, as well as the comeback to the Southern Baptist Church with the help of the family. He speaks of himself as of a true Southern Baptist. However his views on some issues differ from the official views of the church. Clay was presented in the Christian Music Planet as the first American Idol Christian as well as in a story for the January/February 2005. His part in the Commodores "Jesus is Love" helped Aiken and Ruben Studdard gain a standing ovation at the American Music Awards in 2003. Nevertheless, in terms of recording his songs, the artist prefers to stick to the pop genre. His philosophy was to include the physically and mentally challenged into society and serve other people.
Besides music, Aiken has been very active in the charities. He is particularly preoccupied with the issues of autism together with Diane Bubel, whose son Michael is suffering from autism and was educated by Aiken. Bubel and Aikel were founders of the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, which promotes the integration of children with disabilities into the usual social environment of non-disabled and disabled people. The Bubel/Aiken Foundation organizes special summer camps, and also grants "Able to Serve" awards to fund the volunteer efforts of children with physical and intellectual disabilities. The organization was given a $500,000 grant by the government of the country for developing a special curriculum with the aim of including the children into schools across the nation. Besides, the organization State Farm has rendered $1.5 million dollars to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation to help initiate a primary education program based on providing social and life skills by means of serving children of all levels of ability.
