American singer-songwriter Dar Williams specializes in "folk-pop". The musician is a frequent performer at various folk festivals across the United States, including the popular Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Hillsdale, NY. Williams has toured with many prominent artists, like Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Nields, Ani DiFranco, Girlyman, Shawn Colvin, Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, and Catie Curtis.
In the late ‘90s, Dar Williams, together with Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell formed the band Cry Cry Cry as a way to pay homage to their favorite folk singers.

Dar Williams has since released 3 more studio records on the Razor & Tie label (The Green World in 2000, The Beauty of the Rain in 2003, and My Better Self in 2005), and a live album (Out There Live in 2001).
The performer has lent her talent to many causes, like founding the Snowden Environmental Trust. Williams also took part in many benefit shows. The singer performed in a concert at Alcatraz along with the Indigo Girls and Baez, to benefit the Bread and Roses, prisoner-rights group.
The musician has long maintained during her interviews that she always wanted her work to become an “efficient” career, and something that she could do her entire life. Williams has always strived to accomplish this by continuously “keeping writing stuff that feels risky about things you believe in”. The singer confessed that she couldn’t stand songwriting clichés and instead “dig” deeper into the meanings of things in order to find and reveal their inner beauty.
The specificity of William’s lyrics, frequent presenting narratives or describing characters or incidents, has led many listeners to presume that her compositions were autobiographical.
