About the Del McCoury Band
Since February 1, 1939, Del Mccoury has been on this earth living and breathing music starting from his birthplace of Bakersville, North Carolina and moving on to York County, Pennslyvania, north of the Mason-Dixon line. Del got his first taste of music after listening to Flatt and Scruggs. After a short while in the military Del was released on medical leave and started playing around the now booming Baltimore bluegrass scene. He became a Blue Grass Boy in 1963, playing guitar for the band. Del went back to Pennsylvania where he again dawdled around the bluegrass scene eventually forming his own band Del and the Dixie Pals in 1967.
more The band was a part-time job for Del as he worked in the power plant and various construction jobs to pay the bills. The band continued through 1981, when Del’s son Ronnie joined the band at age thirteen playing mandolin. In 1987, Del’s other son Robbie joined the band playing bass then banjo. Their success led them to Nashville where they won numerous amounts of International Bluegrass Music Association Awards. The nineties brought collaborations with bands popular in the “jam band scene” such as Phish, Steve Earle, and the String Cheese Incident. The Del McCoury Band is not just music of the past but they embrace the future.
